Paynesville and East Gippsland are home to some of the most scenic and enjoyable tracks for riding, walking, and jogging in Victoria. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, these trails offer something for everyone. Here are our favourite tracks with their return trip distances:

Favourite Tracks

4.5 km Return: Captains Cove to Sunset Cove
A perfect short walk or jog that takes you along the picturesque coastline. Enjoy the serene views and refreshing air as you travel between Captains Cove and Sunset Cove.

6.5 km Return: Captains Cove through Sunset Cove and Newlands Drive Foreshore
Start at Captains Cove, continue through Sunset Cove, and follow the Newlands Drive Foreshore. The trail leads to a beautiful view over Newlands Arm at the top of the hill.

10 km Return: Captains Cove to Eagle Point via Newlands Drive
This longer trail takes you from Captains Cove through Sunset Cove, along Newlands Drive, and up to the corner of Newlands & Grandview Drive. Cross over Paynesville Rd to Eagle Point, where you’ll travel along Lake King. Morning and late afternoon walks might reward you with sightings of kangaroos. Return via Toonalook Parade, Paynesville Rd, Main Rd, and King St to Captains Cove.

Raymond Island

Raymond Island is one of the safest and most picturesque spots for cycling. Take your bike on the ferry (free of charge) and explore the bushland and streets while spotting koalas in their natural habitat. Don’t forget to bring insect repellent. More info on the Raymond Island Koala Trail.

East Gippsland Rail Trail

Known as one of Victoria’s longest rail trails, the East Gippsland Rail Trail stretches 100 km through rolling farmland, charming villages, serene forests, mountain views, and wide rivers. A must for any avid cyclist or hiker.

90 Mile Beach: Steamer Landing to Ocean Grange

This part of the iconic 90 Mile Beach is accessible only by boat. Steamer Landing offers stunning views and a tranquil walk along the sandy shores to Ocean Grange.

Rottamah Island to Ocean Grange/90 Mile Beach (2-hour walk)

Reachable by a 15-minute boat ride from Captains Cove to Rottamah Island jetty, this trek offers a wildlife and fauna wonderland. Follow the signs to 90 Mile Beach and Ocean Grange. Note that the track is not well-marked, so ensure your phone is charged for navigation. The track requires some bush-bashing, ideal for those who enjoy off-road adventures. You can also walk to Ocean Grange Homestead and back along the beach to the Rottamah Island track’s starting point.
